The Great Escape 23 - OSI 5

GLASTONBURY

Having come within an inning of their first win against Bagelz on Friday, Team OSI was itching to play. But dark morning clouds and the threat of rain had left them frustrated at the possibility of another rain out. Then in the early afternoon, the clouds broke. At four o'clock, the sun was out and the team was ready.

But an hour before game time, the wind turned. By the time Open Solutions took the field, the clouds were back, low and gray, the wind was blowing in from center field, and it was so cold the beer was shivering. The team began to wonder if the sudden turn in the weather was an omen.

It was.

The Great Escape scored nine runs in the first on the way to a 23-5 win over Team OSI. Yet it was worse than that. Because the wind was blowing in, it was 23 runs without a home run; it was 23 runs... one... run... at... a... time...; it was a long, slow, water-torture of a loss.

I can't even write about it. Instead I'll use photos to illustrate the three major points of the game. (I've edited the pictures to protect the innocent.)

1: Team OSI couldn't field the ball:

2: Team OSI couldn't hit the ball:

3: And The Great Escape scored--over and over and over:

Highlights: Lynn "Shades" Cecere had two hits, a run scored, and an RBI. And third baseman Tom "Turn Two" Tartaro spun the season's first ground ball double play: in the 5th inning with Great Escape runners on first and second, Tartaro moved to his right, picked a grounder, touched third, and threw down to second in time to double up the runner. Since he had also recorded the first putout on an unassisted fielder's choice force at third, TT was responsible for every out of the inning.
